TMJ Disorder (TMD)

TMJ is the initialism for “temporomandibular joint.” These joints lie on either side of the face, and they connect the lower jaw to the rest of the skull. This joint is responsible for essential jaw functions like biting and chewing.

If you are experiencing headaches or pain in the muscles of the jaw, you may be suffering from temporomandibular disorder (TMD). TMD might be caused by tooth grinding or clenching, injury to the jaw, or arthritis.

Some of the symptoms of TMJ disorder include:

  • Difficulty chewing.
  • Pain when opening or closing the mouth.
  • Jaw becoming stuck.
  • Chronic headaches or migraines.
  • Pain or ringing in the ears.
  • Clicking or popping sounds when opening and closing the mouth.

Find Lasting Headache Relief

Patients don’t generally think to see their dentist when they are experiencing frequent headaches or migraines, but in reality, your jaw may be the cause of your problems. Dr. Zweber can help you diagnose and treat your condition. You find relief from the distracting head pain!

Often, the unconscious habits of clenching or grinding the teeth strain the muscles on either side of the head, around the jaw. These habits often cause TMJ disorder (TMD). When the TMJ muscles spasm from too much clenching, headaches may be the result.

Fortunately, our team can effectively diagnose and reverse the effects of TMD.

Comfortable TMD Treatment

A bite splint, or a night guard, is a removable appliance that fits over the top or bottom teeth. It may be worn only at night or during the day, depending on your needs.

Dr. Zweber will bring you in for analysis, where she will learn everything she can about your bite and your TMJ. She will then create a bite splint that is custom-designed to fit your teeth and relax your jaw. The bite splint will stop you from clenching or grinding the teeth, protecting the teeth surfaces and mitigating the effects of TMD.
